WCU History Department to host National History Day regional competition

CULLOWHEE – Western Carolina University will host a National History Day regional academic competition Saturday, March 18, that will feature middle and high school students creating projects based on a central historical theme.   Several hundred students from Western North Carolina are expected to take part in the noon until 5 p.m. event presented by the WCU History Department.   This year’s theme is “Taking a Stand in History,” which encourages students to explore those individuals who have taken risks and taken a stand, whether in a political, social, religious, military, economic, intellectual or artistic sphere. Just outside of Belmont, North Carolina there are over 100 acres of gardens waiting to be explored at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens.  From willow mazes to garden fountains these gorgeously laid out botanic wonders offer a full sensory experience to visitors young and old year round.  However on this cool, rainy January day it was to the Orchid Conservatory to which my family and I slogged through the puddles and drips.  The five story, 8000 square foot conservatory houses thousands of tropical plants including orchids, and it was the orchids that I wanted to see. As the sun set and the full moon rose from a tree lined horizon, the Historic Village of Brattonsville was bathed in the glow of lantern lined paths, small bon-fires and candle lit buildings.
